The Fine Contents of a Wiltshire Country House

Everyone enjoys a 'contents' sale and this auction was no different with the property proving to be a complete treasure trove, it has been an absolute pleasure to be able to asssit the family with the sucessful sale and to also to meet so many new and old clients.

In all there were around 1000 registered online bidders keenly contesting all sections of the sale with some notable results, some we have listed below but being honest there are so many to mention.

Attributed to Giuseppe Bison (1762-1844) - 'Grand Canal, Venice', figures in gondolas and other boats on The Grand Canal, inscribed in the artist's name and the title of the work together with his dates on later plaque attached to the frame and also previously inscribed on a partial label verso with name Francesco Mola, 'Venetian Canal Scene' possibly, with Frost & Reed of London & Bristol receipt no. 31509, oil on canvas, 21.5" x 30"; within a Chippendale style gilt gesso and wooden frame

Pair of impressive giltwood console tables in the George II style after a design by William Kent, the rectangular verde marble top above a Greek key moulded frieze, supported by an eagle with spread wings perched upon rocks, on a faux marble painted reverse breakfront plinth base, 31" wide, 34" high, 16.5" deep

Rare stumpwork framed dressing table mirror, the needlework early 18th century and later, inset with a rectangular mirrored plate within a border worked with animals and insects amongst flowers, the stained wooden back with a strut support, 17.75" x 22.5"

Fine Regency lacquered and gilt X-frame stool attributed to Thomas Hope (1769-1831), with gilt leopard's head terminals applied with brass rings and modern tassels, upon a sweeping x-frame united with a central turned stretcher with downswept supports terminating with carved paw feet, button upholstered seat, 31" high, 35" wide, depth 19" 

** Provenance - From the Lord St. Audrey's collection who lived in the Taunton area. Purchased from Glaisher and Nash Ltd, London in June 1966 where it was sold as 'by Thomas Hope, circa 1810'

Circle of Sir William Beechey RA., (1753-1839) - portrait of the Duke of Cumberland in Light Dragoon uniform holding his shako and sword, extensively inscribed on various old labels and catalogue fragments, oil on panel, 34.5" x 24"; giltwood and gesso frame

** Provenance - Ex. collection Sir Wathen Arthur Waller Bt., Woodcote, Leek Wootton, Warwickshire also with the International Galleries 161, Strand, London WC2, the picture was with them on 28 June 1950 and was priced at £38.

** The picture bears an extract from the Christie's catalogue dated December 1947 listing it as a portrait of the Duke of Cumberland

** Also with the Parker Gallery 2, Albemarle Street, London, W1 label
